  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution recognizing the historical

  3         significance of the Clewiston Inn.


  5         WHEREAS, the Clewiston Inn is a registered National

  6  Historic Site, located in Clewiston, Florida, Hendry County,

  7  and

  8         WHEREAS, the Inn was built in 1938 by the United States

  9  Sugar Corporation to host company executives and visiting

10  dignitaries and is currently used as a major center for social

11  activities and functions in the surrounding area, and

12         WHEREAS, President Herbert Hoover visited the Inn

13  twice, once while in office and later when he dedicated the

14  levee surrounding Lake Okeechobee, which is named Hoover Dike

15  in his honor, and

16         WHEREAS, many State Governors, officials, and

17  celebrities have visited and stayed at the Inn through the

18  years, and

19         WHEREAS, during World War II, British and American Air

20  Force Cadets training at nearby Riddle Field gathered to

21  socialize, sing, and play the piano at the Clewiston Inn, and

22         WHEREAS, the Inn has in recent years opened its doors

23  as a hurricane storm shelter for local residents, NOW,



26  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:


28         That the Senate recognizes the rich and varied history

29  of the Clewiston Inn and commends the owners of the Inn for

30  its many contributions to the surrounding communities.
